Tonight was date night so we headed to Wolverhampton Grand Theatre to see Educating Rita.

The story follows a young woman called Rita played by Jessica Johnson who longs to broaden her horizons from the social clubs she frequents to the salon that she works in. She makes a life changing decision to enroll on an open university course. Here she meets her jaded, alcoholic university lecturer Frank played by Stephen Tompkinson. The story then continues with how both characters change and learn from each other in quite unexpected ways.

What stood throughout the performance was the quality of acting from both Jessica Johnson and Stephen Tompkinson. The whole performance was based in Frank's office so there was no chance of hiding behind flamboyant set changes. Instead their acting abilities were laid bare. I'm happy to report I was totally enthralled throughout. The story still remains poignant today with moments of wit thrown in for good measure. A real must see!

Educating Rita is on until the 13th July. To book tickets follow the link.
